How One Digital Marketing Visionary Helped Shape Modern SEO Before the Industry Had a Name

Long before Google existed, before social media platforms dominated the internet, and before “SEO” became a recognized marketing term, Alex Miranda was already developing online visibility strategies that would later become the foundation of modern search engine optimization.

Today, SEO is a global multi-billion-dollar industry. But in the mid-1990s, the internet was still largely unexplored territory for businesses. Very few companies had websites, and even fewer understood how online visibility could drive leads and revenue.

That is where Alex Miranda’s story begins.

The Beginning of Geo-Targeted SEO in 1994

In 1994, Alex Miranda began working for his sister, Gina Miranda, at her marketing agency, Marknet Group. At the time, most businesses viewed websites as little more than digital brochures. Search engines were primitive, and the idea of optimizing a website for visibility was almost unheard of.

Miranda had a simple but forward-thinking idea.

Instead of building one generic services page, he began creating individual pages targeting specific services in carefully selected geographic locations throughout New York. The strategy focused on placing service keywords together with locations known for having the type of clientele the agency wanted to attract.

For example, instead of simply advertising “Website Design,” Miranda would create targeted pages focused on services like website design in specific New York markets.

The logic was straightforward:

If people searched for a service in their area, the website should have a dedicated page specifically about that service and that location.

At the time, this concept was revolutionary.

Today, geo-targeted landing pages are considered a standard SEO strategy used by agencies worldwide. But in 1994, very few marketers understood how search engines categorized content geographically.

Miranda recognized the future of localized search years before local SEO became mainstream.

How the Strategy Helped Marknet Group Grow

The strategy worked.

By 1996, Marknet Group experienced significant growth as these geo-targeted pages began attracting targeted online traffic and qualified business leads.

This was during an era when search engines like Yahoo!, WebCrawler, and AltaVista were still evolving their indexing systems. Most companies had no idea how to structure websites for discoverability.

Miranda’s pages helped businesses become easier to find online by aligning content with search intent, location relevance, and service-specific targeting, principles that would later become the backbone of modern SEO.

What makes this story remarkable is that Miranda was implementing these concepts years before Google even launched in 1998.

Discovering WebPosition Gold in 1997

In 1997, Miranda discovered a software platform called WebPosition Gold, one of the earliest true Search Engine Optimization tools available to webmasters.

At the time, WebPosition Gold allowed users to:

  • Track keyword rankings
  • Research search terms
  • Monitor website positioning
  • Submit websites to search engines
  • Analyze visibility performance

For many early internet marketers, it was the first real glimpse into measurable SEO strategy.

For Alex Miranda, it became the catalyst that accelerated his vision.

Using WebPosition Gold, Miranda began refining his geo-targeted strategies with actual keyword data and ranking insights. He could now see which pages were performing, how search engines were indexing content, and what users were searching for online.

This changed everything.

The localized service-page concept that had already proven successful for Marknet Group became even more powerful once combined with early SEO tracking and keyword optimization techniques.

Miranda quickly realized these same strategies could help other businesses grow online as well.

He soon began implementing similar SEO techniques for clients across multiple industries, helping companies improve visibility, generate traffic, and attract targeted leads from search engines.

Building SEO Before SEO Was Mainstream

By the late 1990s, Miranda had already accumulated years of practical experience optimizing websites for discoverability, long before SEO became an established profession.

He officially founded Organical – The SEO Experts in 1998, creating what would become one of the earliest continuously operating SEO-focused agencies in the United States.

Unlike many agencies that entered the market after SEO became commercially popular, Miranda was already developing and testing optimization strategies during the earliest years of the web.

  • There were no SEO plugins.
  • No AI platforms.
  • No YouTube tutorials.
  • No online SEO courses.

Everything was built through experimentation, observation, and understanding how search engines interpreted website structure and content.

Many of the same principles Miranda implemented during the 1990s are still fundamental to SEO today:

• Service-specific landing pages
• Geo-targeted content
• Keyword relevance
• Structured website architecture
• User-focused content organization
• Local search visibility

A Pioneer in WordPress SEO and Local Search

As the internet evolved, Miranda adapted alongside it.

He later became recognized for his expertise in WordPress SEO and local search optimization, helping businesses improve rankings through optimized website structures and search-friendly content strategies.

Miranda also founded the Hudson Valley WordPress Meetup Group and became a frequent speaker at WordPress conferences, including WordCamp NYC.

One of his most recognized presentations, “Google Loves WordPress,” ranked among the Top 12 presentations at WordCamp NYC in 2012.

Industry Recognition and Continued Innovation

Under Miranda’s leadership, Organical – The SEO Experts has been recognized by UpCity as being among the top 1% of SEO agencies in the United States.

He has also received multiple “Business Person of the Year” recognitions in Hackensack for his contributions to business and digital marketing.

Today, Miranda continues working at the forefront of search technology through Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative AI SEO, structured data, and AI-driven search visibility strategies.

Yet despite decades of technological change, the core philosophy behind his original 1994 strategy remains the same:

Create highly relevant content that connects the right services with the right audience in the right location.

That idea helped lay the early foundations of local SEO and continues to influence modern search marketing today.
